Dr. András Benczúr

Professor emeritus, Eötvös Lorand University Budapest, Faculty of Informatics

Doctor of Science in mathematics, (1989). Graduated at the Eötvös Loránd University in math (1967). The topic of his master theses was in probability theory, supervised by Prof. Alfréd Rényi. He started research at the Computer Center of the Hungarian Academy of ciences and he received interesting result in statistical analyses of stochastic processes together with Mátyás Arató.

At the time of the establishment of the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the HAS he used to work and to lead projects in developing computerized production planning systems for the Danube Steel Work, Tisza Oil Refinery Work, and some large statistical data analyses. He was only 30 when he became the head of the Department of Probability and Statistics of the CARI. That time with János Demetrovics they started the research in database theory which is still one of the main area of his activity.

Main research fields in chronological sequence: parameter estimation of stochastic processes, performance evaluation of computer systems, database system design and resiliency of databases, databases and information theory.
